The ancient civilizations of India were characterized by a long and complex history. In ancient times, the country was fragmented into many kingdoms and principalities. This led to diverse styles in art, architecture, language and even food. Stratigraphy of India Ravindra Kumar Pdf Download is a research paper which traces the stratigraphy of the Indian subcontinent through time, with a particular emphasis on evolutionary stratigraphic events in Eastern India during Early Cretaceous to Quaternary periods from ~120 Ma to 6000 years ago.In it you will find out that this paper has been extensively peer reviewed but it is now accessible for free as an open access article published under Creative Commons Attribution Licence 3. 0. Please read the conditions of use.The main sources of information for the paper are reviewed in the Introduction section; these include pioneering studies by Day (1964), Chopra (1965), Ghosh (1970) and Sengupta (1971). They provide a foundation for understanding geology, palaeontology, botany, biogeography and other disciplines that are relevant to stratigraphy of India. These sources are supplemented by more recent studies which specifically deal with events in Eastern India during Early Cretaceous to Quaternary periods. Pre-Cretaceous events are documented by the stratigraphic record of India. However, there is relatively less work done on early period rocks in Eastern India. The available data indicate that many pre-Cambrian oceanic terranes were amalgamated into the Indian subcontinent during formation of Gondwana. These include the Dharwar Craton, Bangur-Tambo Composite Terrane, Rajmahal Terrane and Assam Craton. The tectonic amalgamation of these terranes led to the formation of large cratons with sedimentation on its flanks. Some of the remnant cratons are now separated by oceans. However, they are close to each other in space and time, as indicated by geological observation methods including palaeomagnetism, rock magnetism and geochemistry. The Gondwanide Orogeny marked the close of Paleoproterozoic Era and the beginning of Phanerozoic Era around 570 Ma. It is recorded by widespread granite plutons intruded into early Cambrian sediments. These record both the age and duration of this orogeny in India. Further, the granites contain a large volume of U-Pb zircon date from 580 Ma to 530 Ma. This indicates two distinct pulses of granitoid magmatism in this early stage, with a probable hiatus between them. During this time, there were widespread volcanic activities across India, which is recorded by widespread volcanogenic sediments called the Rajmahal Traps found from Assam to South India. Sengupta (1971) concluded that the Nama-Gondwanan continental margins were covered by the Bengal Traps during the close of Paleozoic Era and most of Mesozoic Era.
